Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 4 campaign: early access from October 16, the Korean invasion premise, Captain Price's off-book mission, and what this page tracks.

Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 4 launches on Steam on Oct 22, 2026 at $69.99. Campaign early access opened October 16; DMZ early access opens October 20. Last verified 2026-10-16.

Early access

Campaign early access opened October 16, 2026 — it is playable now. The full game launches October 22.

The story

A young squad of South Korean soldiers fights to survive on the collapsing front lines, while half a world away Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows, staying one step ahead of those hunting him. His off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion and the war spreads beyond anyone’s control.

Campaign early access opened October 16

Modern Warfare 4’s campaign became playable in early access on Oct 16, 2026 — four days before DMZ early access and six before full launch. This page covers the campaign specifically, and the early-access window matters for reading it: what was available on the 16th is not necessarily what shipped on the 22nd.

Why an early-access campaign is not the finished campaign

Early access in Call of Duty has historically meant one of three things, and they are not equivalent:

  • The full campaign, minus nothing — the mode most used, gated to build attention early.
  • A subset of missions — the strongest missions released first, the rest later.
  • Prologue-only — a single opening mission that establishes tone and nothing else.

Which one Modern Warfare 4 used is worth confirming against what players actually got on Oct 16, because it changes how this page should be read. The tone-setting interpretation and the full-playthrough interpretation imply very different expectations for launch day.

Eight studios, and what that means for the story

Infinity Ward leads, with Beenox, Digital Legends, Activision Shanghai, Raven Software, Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games and High Moon Studios contributing. Campaign work is the most authorially unified part of a Call of Duty release, and multi-studio campaigns tend to show seams — missions that feel like different games. If that pattern holds here, it will show in the campaign’s pacing rather than in its mechanics.

What the campaign is confirmed to contain

From the Steam store listing: a global conflict setting, infantry and vehicles fighting together, and large-scale maps. That is the confirmed frame. Mission titles, character names, set pieces, and story structure are not published, and this page will not guess at them.

This is worth stating plainly because campaign wikis are where fabrication is most tempting — a plausible mission name costs nothing to invent and could be entirely wrong. If you find campaign mission lists on other sites before Oct 22, that is the first thing to distrust.

What this page tracks

  • Which missions were available in early access versus added by launch
  • Mission objectives and their optional variants
  • The setting as actually depicted, versus as described
  • Difficulty options and whether they affect mission outcomes

How launch week will change this page

Campaign pages age fastest of any Call of Duty category, because the campaign is a finite, published thing — unlike multiplayer, there is no “next season” to keep it fresh. Once launch passes, this page’s job becomes reference accuracy rather than anticipation, and its value rests entirely on being right about what shipped.

The release schedule this page follows

Three dates govern what is verifiable about Modern Warfare 4, and this page updates against all three:

DateMilestoneWhat becomes verifiable
Oct 16, 2026Campaign early accessCampaign content goes live
Oct 20, 2026DMZ early accessDMZ content goes live
Oct 22, 2026Full launch ($69.99)Everything else unlocks

Anything published before the relevant date is a prediction, not a fact. This wiki marks it as one.

What this page will not tell you

Modern Warfare 4 ships Oct 22, 2026 and this page is written ahead of it. That creates an obvious temptation to fill the gap with plausible-sounding numbers, and it is a trap: wrong numbers that look authoritative are worse than an honest gap, because readers cannot tell which are which.

So the rule here is simple. Every figure and every name on this page is quoted from Activision, from the Steam store listing, or from the published schedule. Where something is genuinely unknown, this page says “not published yet” rather than estimating. When the game ships, these entries get replaced with the real thing.
