Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 4 Operators guide

Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 4 operators: the Hunter Killer skin, the eight studios that ship the game, and what this page tracks per operator.

10/16/2026 MW4 Wiki Team Last updated: 10/16/2026 5min read

Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 4 launches on Steam on Oct 22, 2026 at $69.99. Campaign early access opened October 16; DMZ early access opens October 20. Last verified 2026-10-16.

What is confirmed

The store page advertises a Hunter Killer Operator Skin as a pre-purchase bonus, immediately unlockable and usable in DMZ at launch. Operator kits are otherwise unpublished.

Eight studios ship this game

  • Infinity Ward
  • Beenox
  • Digital Legends
  • Activision Shanghai
  • Raven Software
  • Treyarch
  • Sledgehammer Games
  • High Moon Studios

Operator design is usually divided between them, so this page attributes every operator to the team that built it rather than listing a flat roster.

Eight studios means eight operator rosters

Infinity Ward leads Modern Warfare 4, but the game ships content from seven other studios: Beenox, Digital Legends, Activision Shanghai, Raven Software, Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games and High Moon Studios. In Call of Duty, operator packs are one of the clearest per-studio signals — different teams historically own different parts of the game, and operator design follows that split.

The practical consequence: expect the operator roster to arrive unevenly and to expand across the season. A roster that looks thin in the first week of October is not evidence of a small roster in October.

What an operator actually is

An operator bundles three things:

  • A passive ability — always on, no button. This is the part that changes how you play rather than what you press.
  • An active ability — bound to a key, usable on a cooldown, sometimes charge-based.
  • A cosmetic layer — the operator’s visible appearance, and their voice.

The passive is what competitive players care about and what reviewers underrate. An active ability with a twelve-second cooldown is situational; a passive that reduces recoil while sliding changes an entire movement pattern permanently. When operator pages start filling in, that distinction is what to sort by.

Operator vs. specialist, and why the distinction blurs

Older Call of Duty games split the roster into operators (defined character, fixed kit) and specialists (customisable, player-built). Modern Warfare titles increasingly merge the two: specialists gain a fixed identity but keep some customisation.

For a wiki, this matters because it changes the page structure. A pure operator roster is a list — twenty rows, each one fixed. A merged roster is a matrix — operator identity crossed with the options that remain customisable. Both need different templates, and building the wrong one first means reworking every page later.

Skin rarity and what actually matters

Modern Warfare 4’s store copy references a Hunter Killer operator skin, which tells you operator cosmetics are a live revenue surface here. Rarity tiers are a business mechanic rather than a gameplay one, so this site keeps them in a single column and does not treat them as a ranking. What matters competitively is the ability, and that is what operator pages lead with.

What this page tracks per operator

  • Passive ability, with the specific play pattern it enables
  • Active ability, its cooldown and its charge rule
  • How the operator performs in DMZ, where kit loss changes ability value — see DMZ
  • Availability by release milestone, since the roster grows after launch

The release schedule this page follows

Three dates govern what is verifiable about Modern Warfare 4, and this page updates against all three:

DateMilestoneWhat becomes verifiable
Oct 16, 2026Campaign early accessCampaign content goes live
Oct 20, 2026DMZ early accessDMZ content goes live
Oct 22, 2026Full launch ($69.99)Everything else unlocks

Anything published before the relevant date is a prediction, not a fact. This wiki marks it as one.

What this page will not tell you

Modern Warfare 4 ships Oct 22, 2026 and this page is written ahead of it. That creates an obvious temptation to fill the gap with plausible-sounding numbers, and it is a trap: wrong numbers that look authoritative are worse than an honest gap, because readers cannot tell which are which.

So the rule here is simple. Every figure and every name on this page is quoted from Activision, from the Steam store listing, or from the published schedule. Where something is genuinely unknown, this page says “not published yet” rather than estimating. When the game ships, these entries get replaced with the real thing.
